Aperture is measured by F-stops, or the amount of light the lens will let in. Focusing and depth of field are also important when setting the aperture on your camera. You have to know what numbers will allow more light to enter the lens and the converse to avoid over exposure and blurriness. Shutter speed is the amount of time a lens is open for the picture. You may have found in a darkened room without flash your camera takes a while to imprint the picture on the negative. This is because the light is dim and the shutter must correct for the lack of light. The lack of light induces a need to expose the film longer to obtain the picture where as more light will have the shutter moving at a faster speed.

From the manual cameras we moved into the automatic. The camera became lighter. The shutter speed and aperture was programmed into the camera by the settings. ISO became important. ISO is the film speed. Instead of taking minutes to set up a shot you just had to pick the correct setting and hold the button down to focus. Many cameras came as automatic with manual options for those who still liked to treat photography as an artistic vocation.

Digital cameras are the new era in photography. Now we can see the picture we take without the use of film and negatives. We can send the pictures to all of our friends and use our home printers to create prints. Kabuki is a traditional Japanese theater art. The word Kabuki is derived from the japanese word kabuki which means avant-garde or bizarre theater. This work has been tampered with over a period of time. The kabuki which we witness now isnt the same what it used to be before. The founder of this art was Okuni, who was a young lady who served a Shinto shrine named Lzumo Taisha. She gained attention by adapting a completely new dance form at the theaters at the dry river beds of Kyoto in the year 1603. Basically it started with only female artist who even did the role of men. The stories were based on the common people with a comedic twist. After the initial success Okuni was invited to show her performance at the royal court. Out of envy other troupes began adopting the same style of dancing and kabuki became a common style. The women involved in kabuki began entering prostitution so they were banned from performing further and men took over their place. The attention shifted from dance to performance. But the performance by the men also became salacious and they too started prostitution as a side profession and worked for both men and women customers

Kabuki then became a field of art for matured men. These men put in more effort to bring up the reputation of kabuki. The men who performed the role of women were known as Oyama or Onnagata. Basically there were two types of role named Aragoto or rough style and Wagoto or Sakata tojuro. Yaro kabuki or mens kabuki was the stylized version and Kyogen comic theater was a very influential factor as it was very popular then.

The kabuki artists wore detailed makeup. Aragoto character or the reckless warrior character has a pompous role with bright clothing and loud makeup. The style too is loud and exaggerated and involves more action. On the contrary Wagoto is a more cultured role with decent dialogue delivery and gestures.

The Genroku period showed more interest in Kabuki arts. It had started to be performed in formal theaters. Chikamatsu Monzaemon was the first known playwright of kabuki and later on produced many other renowned works. His works revolved around tragic-romances where the lovers used to suicide in the end. Many followed this theme which forced the authorities to put a ban on such kinds of plays known as Shinju Mono. After few years of success kabuki was taken over by Bunraku or Puppetry. This was due to the increase in the number of Bunraku playwrights.

But after the defeat of Tokugawa Shogunate Empire in 1868 kabuki arts returned to it full form. Initially a kabuki performance was made in front of the king Meiji. It caught his interest at the first instance. Many kabuki theaters were brought up during that era.

During the World War II many theaters were lost during the bombing and a ban was levied on kabuki. But in 1947, the kabuki performances started again with the lift of the ban and once again began to flourish across the country.

The most successful modern racing pigeons were developed in Belgium. They were a result of a cross between the Cumulet and the Smerle. The Cumulet is often described as a pigeon that has the ability to fly high and can be gone out of sight from the sky. The Smerle, on the other hand, doesn't fly as high as the Cumulet, but is much faster and hastier.

It's no surprise that the Belgians were the ones who first enjoyed the hobby of pigeon racing. The first long distance pigeon race was in Belgium in 1818. But go carting is not only for the professionally-minded drivers. Go carts are usually driven by non-professionals, people just like you or me, out for a good time and a lot of excitement. A go cart is made up of a chassis, motor, transmission, seat and 4 tires and a few other odds and ends. As mentioned earlier they have no suspension. The chassis must provide the stiffness and also enough flexibility to allow the cart to grip the road well on the straightaways as well as in the turns. The chassis can be either open or caged. The caged chassis allows protection for the driver in the event of a rollover while the open chassis does not. The cage performs a similar function as does a roll bar.

Engines used in carting are typically either 2-stroke or 4-stroke. They are made by manufacturers such as Honda or Briggs and Stratton among others. You would think that the 4-stroke engines would be more powerful than the 2-stroke engines, but that's not usually the case.

If you have ever wondered how fast go carts can travel you will be amazed at the top speeds. Sprint carts can usually get up to about 60 mph while the more powerful enduro carts can reach a top speed of about 90 mph. And if that's not fast enough for you how about the shifter karts that reach top speeds of 160 mph or more. You heard right, that is not a misprint and these are certainly not toys. Transmissions differ from cart to cart, but the shifter carts use a manual transmission with a clutch that allows the driver to get the most out of the motor.

It seems as though every part of the go cart has become a separate entity, a specialized piece of equipment with different options available to the purchaser. And with regard to the tires they are certainly no exception. In dry weather slicks are used. They are smooth tires that grip the road well. And as they heat up while driving they get even better traction. During wet weather tires with treads are needed. These are called rain tires. And of course, how could any respectable driver racing on ice do without specialized spiked tires? That's correct, there are even go cart races on ice in some parts of the world.

With the many different levels available for drivers today anyone can race at a comfortable level. And the sky is the limit to a talented driver. With a lot of practice, a bunch of talent and a little luck you might find yourself racing alongside Tony Stewart someday. It's certainly possible.

Jujitsu training includes learning striking, body throws, sweeps, joint-locks, off-balance throws, pinning, grappling, wrestling, strangulating holds, submission holds, and even weapon skills such as with the tanto. Jujitsu training also includes defensive strategies such as evasion, blocking, blending, escaping, and maintaining balance.

During the Edo period is when the Jujitsu that we recognize today started to come into being. The Nihon Jujutsu of today is a child of Edo Jujutsu, which was less battlefield oriented and focused on dealing with unarmored opponents. One of the primary differences is the addition use of striking vital targets. This would not be of much use against an armored opponent, but it is very powerful when used against an enemy in civilian or street clothes.

One aspect of the original forms of Jujitsu training that is no longer seen much is the use of a cord to restrain or choke an attacker. While these techniques are not as relevant with today's weapons, Tokyo police still carry a hojo cord and train with it regularly.

Truly modern Jujutsu was founded towards the end of the Tokegawa period around the year 1850. Around this time many Jujutsu schools sprung up which stressed Jujitsu training based on the Edo Jujustsu system rather than the Sengoku Jujutsu system as battlefield confrontation was no longer very relevant.

Modern Jujutsu is employed by law enforcement and military all around the world. It is a very effective way to restrain an attacker without using lethal force. If an opponent is not trained in Jujutsu, it is very hard for them to defend against Jujutsu's attacks and control maneuvers. Modern Jujutsu is also very popular in the mixed martial arts sport of today, and there are also many Jujutsu specific competitions.

One of the reasons Jujutsu is so effective is that it specializes in reacting to any given situation. You do not just run striking drills and hope an opponent cannot defend against your combinations. Jujutsu allows the student to stay effective no matter where the fight goes. If the fight goes to the ground, the Jujutsu student is prepared. In the same year, Atari launched Pong. This is a coin operated machine and is played with two short vertical lines that you move up and down to avoid letting the ball pass.

The real video game revolution began in the late 70s. Atari introduced the Video Computer System or the VCS (renamed Atari 2600 later). This system uses cartridges and delivered colored graphics and sounds through the television. The game was played using a joystick or paddles.

The Atari 2600 were the most popular gaming systems ever invented in its time. The system was always in demand that retail stores constantly ran out of stock, especially on the holidays.

However, in early 80s, more and more video game manufacturers began coming out. An example would be Nintendo. Nintendos Family Computer was a worldwide success and sold over 500,000 units all over the world for a short period of two months. In 1985, Nintendo released a similar system in the United States called the Nintendo Entertainment System.

With the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in the US, it also released the Super Mario Bros. video game that was a total hit. The Super Mario Bros. game reportedly had a worldwide sale amounting up to 40.24 million dollars and was declared as the best-selling game of all time.

In the late 80s more and more video game manufacturers began releasing their latest video game systems. Sega Enterprises released the Genesis home video game system in the US and was a total hit. It generated sales amounting up to 14 million dollars.

In 1995, Sony Electronics released the 32-bit CD-ROM game system called the PlayStation in the US. It was a phenomenal hit and this was the beginning of the Sony PlayStation legacy.

The popularity of Sony PlayStation paved the way to more advanced graphics system and other video gaming systems manufacturers began to follow suit. The CD-ROM technology to be integrated in a video game system is now the most popular way to play a video game.

Sega Enterprises and Nintendo followed with a similar concept of using a CD-ROM to play its games instead of using cartridges.

Sega released the Dreamcast video game system in Japan in 1998 with features like a 200 MHz processor, 12X speed 1 Gigabyte CD-ROM drive and a 56 kbps modem. However, it arrived too late to threaten the Nintendo 64 and the much anticipated PlayStation 2.

In the year 2000, PlayStation released the PlayStation 2 with great success. About 1 million units were shipped from Japan on the first weekend and have been one of the most popular video game systems ever released since Atari.

Other companies also followed. Nintendo released the GameCube video game system and Microsoft released the Xbox game system in the United States. The Xbox had features that no other gaming system had. It had an 8 Gigabyte hard drive, 733 MHz Pentium III Processor and a 250MHz nVidia graphics coprocessor. Also, it was capable of being connected into a broadband internet connection.

In 2005 Microsoft launched the xbox 360 video game system in the United States. It has a wireless controller, headset and a 20 Gigabyte hard drive.

As you can see, video game systems are rapidly advancing in graphics and sound technology. You can only wait and see what Sony, PlayStation, Nintendo and other video game system manufacturers can think of next in the near future. Pre-Historical Times

The Celts and the Iberians

It is believed that the first Iberian population arrived in the peninsula from the north of Africa. The first important kingdom was one established by the Tartessos, probably an Iberian tribe. Their high culture flourished in the valley of Guadalquivir River located in the south of Spain.

From the north, the Celtic tribes entered the peninsula in 1200 B.C. They mixed up with the Iberians, thus generating a mixed Celt-Iberian race.

Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians

The next phase in the history of Spain begins barely a century later in 1100 B.C. By this time, the Phoenicians have arrived in the peninsula where they proceeded to build colonies. The most important of these colonies was Gadir, which is now known as Cadiz. In addition, the Greeks also settled in southern Spain and founded colonies there as well as along the Mediterranean coast.

Outside the borders of Spain, the Punic Wars erupted between Rome and Carthago. To gain military advantage, the Carthaginians invaded Spain and conquered large parts of it. After the war, important colonies such as the island of Ibiza and Cartagena, called the new Carthago later by the Romans after defeating Carthago, flourished.

Romans and Goths

After defeating Carthago, Rome turned its eyes on the rich Carthaginian colonies in Spain. The Romans invaded these colonies and ended up conquering the entire Iberian Peninsula.

This is an important point in the history of Spain as the territory was collectively referred to as Hispania and became one of the most important provinces of the Roman Empire. Two Roman emperors, Traian and Hadrian (of the British Hadrians Wall), were born in Spain. So complete was the Roman influence over Spain that Spaniards completely absorbed the Roman culture. Today, this Roman influence is still very evident in the spanish language.

Roman domination saw its end with the coming of the Gothic tribes. In 409, the Goths took advantage of the ailing Roman Empire, invading the peninsula. With Romes eventual fall, the Goths succeeded in establishing their kingdom in 419.

The Moors and the Reconquista of Spain

The last Gothic kingdom fell in 711 under the onslaught of Muslim armies who crossed the Straight of Gibraltar to defeat Roderic, the last of the Visigoth king. This is the Moorish epoch of the history of Spain, a time when Spain succumbed to Islam and were under the rule of the Moorish monarchs.

However, the thriving Christian kingdoms in the north were brought together with the union in marriage of Isabela of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. When Arabian dominance began to break into squabbling caliphates, the Christian reconquista of Spain began.

There are two types of singing in opera. The first is recitative in which the story is being narrated in a non-melodies style and the second is aria, where the performers were more melodious. Chorus is used as a commentator and sometimes as a narrator. Subcategories of recitative are secco or dry recitative and Accompagnato or Stromentato in which orchestra accompanies the performance. Opera can be further classified as singspiel, operetta, semi-opera and opera comique. In these types of opera, dialogues are used on the contrary, instead of recitative. Arioso too is replaced by semi-melodic passages.

Opera started with court performances and then shifted to royal theaters. In 1637 this performance was open to public when the idea of opera festival in Venice was brought up by Monteverdi. It was then known as Baroque opera which had a mixture of both the tragic and comic elements along with some education. This started a reform which was promoted by Venices Arcadian Academy. Metastasio was a part of this academy and his libertti became famous till the end of the eighteenth century in italian opera. And this mixed with baroque opera was known as opera buffa.

The characteristic of Opera Seria is that it had a high tone along with secco kind of recitative. It was greatly liked due to it highly stylized form and the singers at that time were very popular and Opera Seria was in great demand all over Europe except France. The hero had the castrato voice such as Farinelli and Senesino and the heroines had the sopranos voice such as Faustina Bordoni. Alessandro Scarlatti, Porpora and Vivaldi were some of the great Opera Seria composers.

But Opera Seria had few loopholes. It concentrated more on drama and left music, singing and ballet behind. It was Francesco Algarotti who brought all this elements back with his composition Essay on the Opera. He was then followed by other great composers such as Niccolo Jommelli, Tommaso Traetta and the most successful, Gluck. He used rich orchestra and vocal lines and brought a reform in Opera Seria.

This operating system was the first to introduce graphical user interfaces (GUI) that made navigating the personal computer much easier for any user.

Using Mac OS as a model, Microsoft began re-vamping their own operating system eventually releasing the first version of microsoft windows which also used GUI technology to make it easier to use a computer. As user requirements became more demanding, Microsoft developed more and more operating system versions to make the computer more efficient.

While Mac OS was the basis for Windows, the latter has certainly taken over the market in popularity. The history of Windows as an operating system is certainly much more involved than Mac. The many versions of Windows each improving on the other has made computer technology evolve into a science that is ever-growing and ever-changing.

Even though computer technology is a relatively new phenomenon, the history of operating systems has a long past. As different versions of the two biggies Windows and Mac OS come out, a new page is written in the computer history books. Just as the history of operating systems has evolved over the years, it will continue to evolve.
